Here’s everything you need before you load up the truck — hours, costs, what they take, and what gets you turned away at the gate.
Where is the Summit County landfill and when is it open?
The Three Mile Canyon Landfill is at 6550 Three Mile Canyon Rd, Coalville, UT — about 25 minutes from Kimball Junction and 20 from Kamas. It’s open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sundays. Call ahead at 435-336-5297 if the weather looks rough; storms can close the gate early. (Source: Summit County Public Works)
What does it cost to dump a load?
Household waste is charged by weight — the posted rate has been $25 per ton with a $10 minimum, so a typical pickup-truck load of household junk runs you the minimum. Electronics are $10 per item. We’re re-confirming current rates with the county — the public fee schedule dates to 2022, and we’d rather flag that than quote you a stale number.

What they WON’T take (and where it goes instead)
- Commercial construction & demolition debris — prohibited at Three Mile. C&D (wood, asphalt, metal, brick, glass) goes to the Henefer Landfill (435-336-3338).
- Commercial green waste — also Henefer.
- Mattresses — the county’s annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day takes them for about $20 each (held each April in Park City — we publish the date every spring). Heads-up: mattresses can’t go in a Snappy Bin dumpster either. It’s a landfill rule, not ours.
- Batteries and paint — free resident hazardous-waste drop-off at the landfill, or Recycle Utah in Park City (we’re confirming their new address — they’re relocating in 2026).
Do I need to make the trip at all?
One pickup load? Make the run. Two or more? Get a bin instead. Here’s the honest math on a multi-trip dump day:
- Your Saturday — each round trip is 40–50 minutes of driving from Park City or Kamas, plus loading, tarping, weighing in, and waiting in the Saturday line at the gate.
- Your tires — landfill roads are paved with other people’s nails, screws, and scrap. Punctures are a genuine, common cost of DIY dump runs.
- Your project — the garage doesn’t get reclaimed until the last load leaves. Trip-by-trip, that’s a multi-weekend job.
